The Villa del Sol d'Oro ("the Villa") is a two-story 15,758 square foot former single-family residence located in the center of the campus, used for school-related functions and for-profit special events, including weddings and filming. The Villa is on the City’s local historic landmark list.
The Villa provides a setting for events and social gatherings because of its formal setting, its architectural and historic significance, and outdoor terrace and surrounding mature gardens. The Villa was designed by noted architect Wallace Neff, as a replica of an existing Tuscan villa in Florence Italy designed by Michelangelo. Built in 1920s, its original use was a private residence of Dr. and Mrs. W. Jarvis Barlow. In 1949, the property was sold to the Sisters of Saint Francis for use as a convent. By 1960, the then Alverno High School was built on the property.
Currently, the Villa is used for AHA school events, such as dances, receptions, fund raisers, and retreats. It is not uncommon for Institutional uses, such as churches for example, to have incidental spaces such as meeting/banquet halls and reception spaces where social gathering and events occur. Churches typically hold weddings and wedding receptions. Private rental events at the Villa, such as wedding receptions and retreats, have occurred for over 20 years. The Villa is also used for commercial photography and motion picture filming. Alverno uses the revenue generated from renting the Villa for special events and for film shoots for the ongoing upkeep and maintenance of the Villa and school property.
