Gene Goss

Long-time Sierra Madre resident Gene Goss was first elected to Sierra Madre City Council in April of 2014. He served as Mayor in 2016/2017. He was re-elected to the Council in 2018 and served again as Mayor in 2022. He was re-elected for a third consecutive term in November of 2022.

Council Member Goss holds degrees in political science from Linfield College and the University of Southern California. For thirty-two years he has been a Professor of Political Science at Long Beach City College. Gene’s professional research interests include policy innovation in local government, state and federal environmental policy, water policy in California and the Southwest, and federal fiscal policy.

Gene currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Foothill Employment and Training Consortium Policy Board. He also serves as Council Liaison to the Sierra Madre Public Library Board of Trustees, and to the City’s Transportation Subcommittee. Gene currently represents Sierra Madre on the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and is the City’s alternate delegate to the Southern California Association of Governments. In his two terms as Mayor, he represented Sierra Madre on the Board of Directors for the Los Angeles County Sanitation District. He has also served as Council Liaison to the City’s Water Subcommittee, Chamber of Commerce, Police Department, Public Safety Committee, Community Services Commission, and Senior Community Commission. Before serving on the City Council, he served as Vice Chair of the Sierra Madre Public Library Board of Trustees. For many years he served as a coach and manager and general volunteer for the Sierra Madre Little League and as a coach and general volunteer for the Sierra Madre Pony League. He has also volunteered with the Boy Scouts of America.

Gene’s wife of 39 years, Lisa, is an elementary school teacher. Lisa served as a volunteer for the Sierra Madre Little League and served on the Board of the Sierra Madre Pony League. Their son, who was raised in Sierra Madre, is presently in college.

Gene’s favorite event in town is the 4th of July Parade. His hobbies include trout and surf fishing, fitness training, reading humorous fiction and political non-fiction, and following his beloved Dodgers, Trojans, and Raiders.
