Building & Safety

The Building and Safety Division is responsible for structural and life-safety concerns in the construction, demolition or alteration of buildings including, but not limited to, matters such as electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems, energy conservation and access for the disabled.

The Building Inspector and Building Official are available to check plans and specifications, make field inspections of buildings during construction, alteration or repair and interpret and explain safety regulations and compliance with the Uniform Building Code and other codes. Inspection and consultation appointments are made by calling the Development Services Department during City Hall business hours. The Building Inspector is available without an appointment on a first-come-first-serve basis at the Development Services Department Counter, Monday through Thursday from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. The Building Official is available every Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., and on the first and third Thursdays of the month, between 3:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.

Code Enforcement

The City of Sierra Madre Code Enforcement Division's goal is to promote and maintain a safe and desirable living and working environment. The Code Enforcement Officer works with residents, neighborhood associations, public service agencies and other City departments to ensure compliance with the City's Municipal Code and land use regulations. Development Services

The Development Services Department is made up of the Planning, Zoning, and Building & Safety divisions.

Planning and zoning divisions are responsible for regulating the type, scale, and land use that may be established at a given location.

Building and safety division is responsible for structural and life safety concerns in the construction, demolition or alteration of buildings.

Services Include:

  • Zoning Review - Reviews projects for compliance with City zoning codes.
  • Plan Check - Reviews project plans and issues permits for all new development and renovation projects.
  • Building Inspections - Inspects and issues certificates of occupancy for all construction projects.
  • Historic Preservation - Advises about historic preservation issues.
  • Environmental Compliance - Monitors and maintains documents and certifications for State and local requirements.
