The Sanitation Division of the Sierra Madre Public Works Department maintains the City's public sewer system and the City's refuse service. Sierra Madre's refuse service is an automated collection program, contracted by Athens Services, the City's exclusive franchise hauler. This automated collection program provides for commingled recycling, green waste recycling, and solid waste disposal.

The Sanitation Division works with Athens Services to ensure the health and cleanliness of the City. This team also strives to ensure safe and reliable disposal service to the residents and businesses of Sierra Madre.

The Sanitation Division also maintains the city's sewer system. Maintenance is done using high-pressure jetting to clear tree roots and other obstructions from sewer mains. All sewer mains are cleaned in this manner at least once a year. Sewer laterals cannot be maintained in this manner, as the high pressure jetting equipment could potentially damage private property improvements.
